Accessibility

What we aim for

This website is built to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard UK public sector sites are held to, and we hold this one to it because a funding enquiry is exactly the kind of thing nobody should be locked out of.

What that means in practice

• Keyboard. Every link, button, form field and menu can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone. There is a skip-to-content link as the first item on every page, and the focus outline is always visible, never removed.
• Screen readers. Pages use proper headings in order, one main heading per page, and real landmark regions. Every form field has a label attached to it, and error messages are tied to the field they belong to so they are announced rather than just shown.
• Contrast. Every text and background combination on the site has been measured against the WCAG AA thresholds. Our teal is used for rules, icons and large display type only, never for body text, because at body size it does not carry enough contrast.
• Text size. Text resizes to 200% without content being cut off or overlapping. Form fields are set at 16 pixels so that iOS does not zoom the page when you tap into one.
• Motion. The only animation on the site is a short fade as sections come into view. If your device is set to reduce motion, it is switched off completely rather than merely shortened.
• Touch. Buttons, links in navigation and form controls have a target of at least 48 by 48 pixels.
• Images. Every image that carries meaning has a text description. Decorative ones are marked so screen readers skip them.
• Colour. Colour is never the only way something is communicated. Errors are marked with text as well as a colour change.
• Without JavaScript. Every page is readable and navigable with JavaScript switched off. The enquiry form needs JavaScript to submit; if you have it off, email us instead and we will take the details that way.

What we have tested

Every page has been checked with an automated accessibility scanner, tested by keyboard alone, and viewed at 320, 390, 768, 1024, 1440 and 1920 pixels wide. Contrast has been measured on every text and background pair rather than sampled.

Automated testing catches a good deal but not everything. If you use assistive technology and something here does not behave, we would rather hear about it than not.

Known limitations

The logo is a raster image rather than a vector, so at very high zoom levels it will soften before the text around it does. The text version of the name is available to screen readers regardless.
